What is Little City Farm?
We are an family of four, trying to live simply and sustainably in a mid-sized city in southwestern Ontario. We have been living on our 1/3 acre city homestead since 1999, using the principles of permaculture as our guide, while trying to minimize our impact on the environment. We offer hands-on classes related to topics of homesteading, herbalism, traditional crafts, food preservation, foraging, permaculture.
Greg's background is carpentry and construction, as well as a decade of work in the area of local community development. Greg has many years of hands-on experience with the types of homesteading projects that we practice here at Little City Farm, including natural building, permaculture approaches, animal husbandry, DIY greywater reclamation, and organic gardening . At Little City Farm, he has built the strawbale house addition and the passive solar greenhouse/farm studio. Greg also operates a home renovation business called Plane & Simple Home Repair and Renovations.
Karin is a traditional herbalist who teaches hands-on herbal classes at Little City Farm, and facilitates the annual Practical Home Herbalist series. Her passions include folk herbalism, holistic nutrition, wild-foraging, permaculture, writing, and grassroots community education. Karin also makes natural soaps and herbal products with Homestead Herbals and she coordinates the events and ongoing workshops at Little City Farm.
Maya is the lead hand around here. She is our animal caretaker, chicken-wrangler, young herbalist, baker, gardener, and beekeeper-in-training. Her perfect day includes art, a favourite tree to climb, her ukulele, snuggling with her cat Luna, and many hours with a good book to read.
Finley is the youngest urban farmer here. He
happily observes life on
our homestead: from the
smallest snail to the
hawk flying overhead, he keeps an eye everything while munching on fresh garden peas.

Urban homesteading is a simple living lifestyle, that incorporates small-scale agriculture, sustainable & permaculture gardening, and home food production into urban or suburban living.
