Pollinator-Friendly Gardening

In recent years there has been wide-spread information about the mysterious disappearance of honeybees.     Honeybees, and the general insect group of bees (of which there are 20,000 species),  are responsible for pollination of about 30% of our food crops.  The issues facing bees, as well as other native pollinators, are caused in part by lack of plants for food and lack of nesting habitat.  These are issues that we all can help with.

What can you do:
1) create healthy habitat for bees/pollinators
  • grow a wide variety of native plants suitable to your area
  • grow plants and trees with a wide range of flowering time
  • plant forage plants for bees
  • plant nesting plants for bees
  • leave wild zones on your property (twigs, logs, bark, brush)
2) provide water access for bees
  • create a pond area or other open water sources
3) minimize pesticide exposure  for bees
  • use organic practices on your lawn, garden, farmland
  • plant organic non-GMO seeds
  • speak with neighbours to help educate about the benefits of growing organically
