Sprouts & Microgreens: Winter Superfood at your Fingertips
Dates: Sat, Feb 10
Time: 10-12 noon
Facilitator: Karin Kliewer, from Little City Farm
Class Location: Little City Farm, 508 Duke St W, Kitchener
Are you craving dark leafy greens and flavourful local veggies over the winter months? Look no further than your own kitchen counter, where you can easily set up a vibrant sprout and microgreens garden to eat fresh local greens all winter long. These powerhouse raw foods are packed with nutrients, cost pennies to grow, and take only a few minutes a day to care for.
In this workshop we'll show you the indoor sprout garden that we have set up at Little City Farm, and you'll get to taste the variety and intense flavours from these delicious tiny winter greens. We'll demonstrate soil and jar sprouting methods, how to grow leafy greens (like pea shoots, wheatgrass, and buckwheat), and how to grow microgreens (tiny versions of kale, broccoli, chard, cabbage plants, arugula, and herbs like basil and cilantro). We will also cover soaking times, sprouting methods for other foods like seeds and nuts (e.g. sunflower, chia), grains (e.g. wheat, spelt, rye) to be used in making sprouted breads, and beans (e.g. chickpeas, mung).
Prepare to be amazed at how gorgeous and diverse a sprout garden can be, how simple to set up, and how many benefits you will enjoy from sprouting over the winter.
Participants will get to take home their own full tray of pea sprouts that has been started here during the workshop, and resources for further sprouting.
Please note - in this workshop we are talking about growing sprouts that will be eaten at the tiny seedling stage, not seedlings that you will plant out into your garden to become mature vegetables. For our seedling growing workshops please check our other listings here.
